The HFC-3W/O DC/DC converter was selected due to offering isolation and cooling plate. The HFC-3W/O is an example of how a dc/dc converter can be modified to meet a bespoke application.
As the dc/dc converter needed updating to meet new requirements Autronic worked with the client to ensure all standards and requests were met.
Application - Black boxes to be able to record information in extreme operating temperatures and for the product to be used overseas.
The 43W output power is distributed over three outputs with 5.1,12 and -12 VDC. In case the input voltage fails, the outputs continues its operation for up to 20 ms so that the system can safely be shut down in case of emergency until all relevant data is stored.
The input current is limited to 8 A, reverse polarity protection is secured up to 160 V.
The chosen components allows operation and storage temperatures to go as low as -55 °C. This is an extreme case for the dc/dc converter to operate in, however this is what was required by the customer to meet railway standard EN 50155.
Despite narrow installation conditions there is a requirement for the dc/dc to hold a continuous function in temperatures up to 70°C, and up to 85°C for at least 10 minutes, both without derating.
This can only be achieved with a customised design focusing on the aim to reduce the thermal load of the components. The delta from hot spot to ambient temperature is maximally 15 °C.
Another service Autronic offer is the customers own identification on each power supply, this particular case had an internal chip marked with the customer’s serial number. The customer can establish a clear allocation of each current supply this also suits for a 100% traceability of all installed components in the production process by AUTRONIC during the production of the dc/dc converter.
The complete traceability of all incorporated components is standard with AUTRONIC.
Another point to mention is the fire protection according to NF F (French standard) and EN 45445-2 is ensured, the theoretically calculated reliability in case of highest endurance requirements is over 1.1 million hours according to IEC62380 (60° C).
